ELDICO Scientific x Holodiag live webinar - Electron diffraction for small molecules - Monday 19 October 2026

About the webinar.

Monday 19 October 2026  ·  14:00–15:00 CEST  ·  Zoom  ·  Free

Electron diffraction is increasingly relevant for the structural characterisation of molecular compounds of pharmaceutical interest that are inaccessible to conventional X-ray methods. Crystal structure determination, polymorph identification and absolute structure determination can be performed on micro- or nanocrystalline particles within a powder, removing the need to grow large single crystals. Dedicated electron diffractometers enable high experimental throughput, particularly through automated data acquisition.

This webinar presents recent applications to pharmaceutically relevant compounds – the impact of optimising irradiation conditions, and how accurate structural refinements are achieved by accounting for multiple scattering, crystal mosaicity, morphology and bonding effects.

What you’ll take away

  • What Holodiag does, and where 3D electron diffraction fits their workflow
  • The basics of 3D electron diffraction (3DED)
  • Real applications of 3DED to molecular, pharmaceutically relevant crystals
  • How to deal with challenging samples (e.g. beam-sensitive samples)

Your speaker

Emre Yörük (Holodiag), hosted by Eddy Martin (ELDICO Scientific). Emre earned his Ph.D. at the Néel Institute (CNRS) on low-dose electron diffraction for beam-sensitive materials, followed by postdoctoral research at the Institute of Physics in Prague on quantum-crystallographic refinement of electron-diffraction data, and at NYU Abu Dhabi on characterising flexible molecular crystals by electron diffraction.

ELDICO Scientific AG (The Electron Diffraction Company) is a Swiss technology and service company founded in 2019 and based in the Switzerland Innovation Park Innovaare at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), a world-leading research institute for natural sciences and engineering. ELDICO develops, manufactures and commercializes electron diffractometers, i.e. novel analytical instruments for electron based crystallography, enabling to investigate nano-crystalline samples. ELDICO launched the first instrument specifically designed for nano-crystallographic investigations. Proof-of-concept was achieved in 2018 (ETH Zurich, C-CINA Basel) as part of a Nano-Argovia project of the Swiss Nanoscience Institute (SNI). It was published in 2018 and awarded Top 5 "Breakthrough of the Year 2018" by the leading science magazine SCIENCE. In 2020 among other public recognitions on Swiss and EU level, ELDICO took 2nd place in the prestigious Pioneer Prize awarded by Technopark Zurich and the Zürcher Kantonalbank (ZKB). ELDICO’s clients are industrial and academic researchers in large and fast growing industries such as the pharmaceutical industry, the electromobility, and the advanced materials/MOF sector. The company partners with leading engineering companies and component suppliers, among which are Dectris and Excillum, to deliver superior performance. www.eldico-scientific.com
